Bits and bobs...

November 21st, 2013 (11:52 pm)

I can't believe I haven't posted anything since 12 July! Where has the time gone?

The past six weeks or so was swallowed up modding this year's round of dramione_duet, which is always a bit hair-raising and, this year, involved making some art and writing a pinch-hit story, Be careful what you wish for (NC-17).

Title: Let him Sweat
Summary: He's by far the best candidate, but he's so cute when he's worried...
Prompt: Hermione or Draco is holding interviews for a job.

Title: Madam Malkin's Lingerie for all Occasions
Summary: Hermione can't wait to see her fiancé's reaction.
Prompt: A changing room.

Title: Mrs Weasley's Attic
Summary: His portrait's just as infuriating as he is, but sometimes Hermione needs a good argument.
Prompt: Discovered or rediscovered items (could be anything! treasure, centuries old letters, a favorite school quill, wrapped presents that were never given, etc.).

I also made some pieces for a participant who dropped out:

Title: Poor Little Rich Boy
Summary: The Malfoy heir is forced to marry Voldemort's daughter.
Prompt: Hermione Riddle/Draco Malfoy love.

Title: Petrificus Totalus
Summary: A stolen moment ends in tragedy.
Prompt: Hermione Riddle/Draco Malfoy love.

Title: Bad Boy
Summary: Hermione just can't resist him.
Prompt: Hermione Riddle/Draco Malfoy love.

I've been making quite a lot of art recently, including three pieces for the Hawthorn and Vine Reverse Challenge (which will have been sent out to writers as prompts by now, and I can't wait to see the results in early 2014), and also some illustrations for a brilliant Judge Dredd/Judge Anderson story, by hiddencait, called America, don't you cry.

hiddencait's summary: Judge Dredd is undoubtedly the most dedicated Judge in Mega City One, so when DNA and a witness “prove” him to be a murderer, chaos strikes the Hall of Justice. His unofficial partner Cassandra Anderson is determined to clear his name, even if it uncovers the demon of his past – his twin. The quotes beneath the images are from hiddencait's story.

Title Banner

She reached the barest surface of the other mind and then found herself shrieking in pain as blast of light or electricity flashed from the surface of the man’s mind and went straight through her.

“What they have is DNA from a man who has an identical twin, and a witness who’s conveniently immune to most traditional interrogation and apparently psychic-proof. That doesn’t sound like irrefutable evidence to me.”

“Former Judge Joseph Dredd is hereby sentenced to life in Iso. ... Effective immediately.”

She reached out with her mind...

She let her head slide down until she leaned against his arm. The insulated flight suit he wore wasn’t anything close to comfortable beneath her head. The calm center of his mind, on the other hand, that was familiar enough to soothe and send her sliding towards sleep.

“So you want to know what happened? I legitimately saw you, or a slick shit who looks a lot like you, really....”

Frankly Cassandra planned to block that part of their journey out of her mind. That and to use up all of her monthly hot water ration as soon as humanly possible...

“No!” she shrieked, and she felt her mind lash out, slamming into Rico’s with the force of a train. Something pressed back desperately, but then snapped, and there was a sickening silence in her mind. She fell into that silence and didn’t know anything for another long while.

THE END

Other than the pinch-hit story, the only writing I've managed to finish has been a few dmhgchallenge drabbles:

Title: Sins of the Fathers
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Prompt: Innocence

Hermione raced across the park, searching frantically – “Rosie,” she cried, “Rosieeeeee!” – she’d only closed her eyes for a moment!

In the distance, she spotted a head of platinum hair, and broke into a run. “Malfoy,” she roared, “where is she!?” She grabbed him bodily, shaking him with all her might; only fear for her daughter’s safety stopped her using a curse on him.

“Look,” he said, calmly.

He pointed to two cherubs – one blond, one ginger – playing happily together. “They can teach the rest of us a thing or two, Granger,” he said, and held out his hand in friendship.

Title: Star-crossed Lovers
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: None (they're both over the age of consent in the UK).
Prompt: It's a dragon!

She found him on the Astronomy Tower. “Why're you ignoring me?”

He shrugged her hand off his arm. “I don't have time for this now. I've got a job to do.” His voice dropped to a proud whisper. “For him.”

Their eyes met and, from his expression, Hermione feared he might walk away...

But then he reached for her, and kissed her, and it was hard, physical, and desperately hungry.

And later, when, for the very first time, she took him inside her, she could see his starry namesake stretching out above them, briefly dispelling the Darkness like a Patronus.

Title: The string-puller
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Prompt: Book

The book was lying on her table.

Hermione knew it hadn’t been there when she’d gone into the book stacks. She looked around the library, but couldn’t see who might have left it.

Intrigued, she sat down, and started reading.

...

“What made you so determined to find a cure for Dragon Pox?” asked the reporter.

“It happened entirely by chance,” Hermione replied, and she was about to explain how she’d found the book, read it, and become obsessed when, suddenly, she saw everything clearly – the unexpected promotions, the anonymous funding, the pure-blood test subjects...

It was Draco Malfoy!” she exclaimed.

Title: The night Hermione changed sides
Rating: R
Warnings: Voldemort-wins AU
Prompt: New beginnings

Note: It occurred to me after I'd submitted this that it could equally have been called 'The night Malfoy changed sides', which would have made it much more positive!

Silently, Hermione broke into Draco Malfoy’s bedroom. It was rumoured that, when sleeping, Voldemort’s henchman removed the Horcrux he normally wore around his neck.

Lying naked in the moonlight, Malfoy looked like a god...

Hermione tore her gaze away, and searched the nightstand.

There!

Her fingers touched the locket—

Petrificus Totalus!

Hermione’s body froze.

“So the Order’s sent me a gift...”

Her body felt nothing as Malfoy lifted her onto the bed and undressed her, but her stomach was filled with butterflies.

“Now, Granger,” he murmured, “let’s really get to know one another, shall we?”

He lifted the Body-Bind Curse...

But I have bought another little guinea pig to keep the first company (because I'm very good at buying things):

Aww cute little guinea pig!!

I was completely unaware that there was a new Judge Dredd film!!! Good. Grief I'm far too out of touch.

They're worth every penny aren't they?

The Judge Dredd film (Dredd) isn't actually that new -- 2012 -- but it's well worth seeing (though very violent). Karl Urban is Dredd. The story I illustrated also features his (canon) identical twin, so I had to use screenshots from other films, because Urban's Dredd never takes his helmet off ;-)

Hi there.

Your guinea-pigs are adorable.

What's the plant in the top left of your picture?

Hi! They're cute aren't they?

I think the plant's a Japanese acer, but... I took the picture a couple of months ago and this morning it looked dead -- far deader than it looked last winter -- so I'm a bit worried it's succumbed to frost. It had just started to flourish, as well :-(

Great art! Shame that participant dropped out though.

And this reminds me that I should update my drabbles, ugh. Congrats on the wins. (Also, didn't you say you were going to stop at the comm for a bit?)

Those are cute and in photos at least look real enough.

Thanks! I know. Wouldn't it have been great to have had two art duets? Next time, I'm going to include art in the main sign-up post, so we may get more artists.

Thanks -- congrats to you, too. I voted for yours! (These days, I really look for the ones with the most unusual takes on the prompt). No, I had to drop out last month because of going away, but I sort of feel a responsibility to support the comm ;-)

The guinea pigs actually look more real in real life!

Thank you :-)

My back yard gets a lot of sun, so things really grew last summer, but I took the picture a couple of months ago, and everything's looking pretty dead now. Luckily I dragged the olive tree inside before the frost, but I think the acer's got frostbite.

Hi! It's lovely to hear from you! I've commented on your journal entry. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you. I think the main thing is: don't give up until you get a result!

I really must update this journal -- I keep meaning to, but I never seem to get the time, even though I'm not actually doing anything else (which is, I think, the definition of being depressed).

I've actually done quite a lot of post-worthy stuff recently -- been to Vancouver again, written two Draco/Hermione stories and lots of drabbles, launched the next round of the dramione_duet fic/art exchange... And I've had a colonoscopy (though I'm not sure people will want to read about that, LOL). The results were OK -- ie nothing life-threatening, which is good because I was a bit frightened -- but I do need to control the symptoms, so I'm seeing a nutritionist on Saturday.

Anyway, I think you've inspired me! I'm definitely going to update by the weekend :-)
