RIP Stanley

Whilst I was away in Canada, my lovely little hamster, Stanley, who was staying with my brother and his family, died. He was almost two years old, and had recently had a course of antibiotics but, in the end, he doesn't seem to have suffered.

This is him in his prime:

RIP Stanley.

Thank you. He was such a little character; he loved running round the room in his ball.

Awww, he sounds like a delightful chap. Do you have a photo of him running around in his ball? I just love to watch hamsters in balls. They look like they are having fun.

No, I never thought to take a picture of him in his ball. I loved the way he'd run with his little head craned back :-) And the way, when he met an obstruction, he'd back off, and take a run up, and... BANG!

Charming Bebop (me)

That must have been so funny to see. Bebop occasionally goes BANG! but it's usually his body or his head making that noise. LOL

Awww!

Every time I gave Stanley a treat, he had to work out from scratch that the only way to get both it and himself into his bedroom at the same time was to back in with it :-)

LOL, sounds like our kitties and not always being the brightest. Although, Bitty has figured out what certain noises mean and is very good at deducing when she can mooch deli meat.

I wanted to say 'Welcome Back', but that is sad news to return to. I'm sorry.

Thank you. I knew he was getting on, but I thought he'd be fine until I got back. They don't live long enough.

Oh dear - sorry to hear that. Hamsters just stay with us long enough to really get fond if them, don't they!

Thank you. Yes, that's exactly the problem with hamsters. And they're so cute, you can't help but love them.

That's sad - he looks a lovely wee chap though.

He was. He was such a character. He'd stand at the bars of his cage, demanding to be played with.

I am sorry for your loss. I had a guinea pig and when she died she left a big hole in my heart. The vet even sent me a card acknowledging my loss. I think we as pet owners think that other people don't understand our grief when we lose a small pet. People do care.

Thank you. I'm sorry about your guinea pig.

I think the only things that make our love for an animal different are that we always know the animal isn't going to be with us very long, so in a way we're prepared for the loss (though that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt), and that we don't get the same kind of love back from animals -- though they do love us in their own way.
