Some manips and some icons...

November 16th, 2011 (07:47 pm)

The good news: I've survived modding my first dramione_duet fic exchange, despite losing 6 out of 20 participants (!), and I've already submitted my story for dhr_advent.

The not-so-good news: my television died, so I 'had' to buy a new one on credit, and my recurring stomach ache turns out to be a gallstone... I won't know for a week or so whether they need to do anything or whether, as I suspect, it will be a case of "You'll be perfectly fine if you stop eating anything nice." (But, considering what I thought it might be, a gallstone should probably be in the good news).

Anyway, here are some

ninth_eagle recently held a four-round fanmedia challenge: for each challenge, with picture prompts. I decided to make manips rather than write drabbles and, since I'm not a slash fan, and The Eagle is the slashiest (and most extremely AU) fandom I've ever come across, I decided to go back to the book, The Eagle of the Ninth, and use quotes from the text together with screenshots from The Eagle:

...

I -- Cottia Waits...

Prompt:

...

II -- Cub...

Prompt:

...

III -- Marcus had made a habit...

Prompt:

...

IV -- As water flows from water...

Prompt:

man_challenge is no more, so these are the very last scantily clad, suggestive and, in some cases, downright Not Work Safe icons I'll ever make!

Goodness! You've been busy. Some of those men are ULTRA HOT! Where's the cold shower when I need it?

Calapine/Seriously baby

Thoroughly approves of your semi-naked men.

Thoroughly disapproves of your gallstones. Went through the same thing. Was told for years by GPs that my stomach pain was acid reflux despite having what were apparently classic symptoms. The good news is that once they get rid of the gallstones you'll be a new woman.

Seriously. Don't let them fob you off with 'stop eating anything nice'. They can get rid of them for you with ultrasound these days although I don't know how the NHS lottery for that plays out in your area. Do you have the option of going private at all?

Ends health lecture to resume staring at semi-naked men.

Thank you for the advice -- I didn't know about the ultrasound. I'm not on the private scheme at work because they didn't have it when I joined and I got forgotten when they introduced it! (And by the time I found out about it, I had my pre-existing knee trouble). But the NHS round here seems pretty good...

Glad you like the semi-naked men :-)

Shiny!

Ouch for the gallstones - hopefully they can zap them with sound-waves for you - if not then demand keyhole surgery asap!

Those manips are gorgeous. And totally off topic but because I keep meaning to e-mail, but only remembering when I'm nowhere near the computer, I think the rework of Shadowland works well - I could tell where I was much better!

Thank you -- I didn't know about the ultrasound, but forewarned is fore-armed, when I go to the doctor.

And thanks for telling me about Shadowland! I'm so glad to hear it works better now. It's amazing how little lapses in description and dialogue can really send the reader's mind in the wrong direction, and tiny changes can get things back on track!

*winces for you* I do hope the doctors can treat your gallstones properly and permanently.

I love you Eagle of the Ninth manips. The quotes you have chosen are perfect. The cub one is wonderful - the expressions on Marcus' and Esca's faces are absolutely fitting - watching with restrained apprehension.

The Cottia one is lovely too. I understand why she was omitted from the movie and she was a terribly underused character in the book, but I love the manip you have made for her.

As for the icons... Very nice. Very pretty. With an icon, it's knowing where to cut that defines the skill, isn't it? Your eye is very good.

Thank you :-)

I was amazed how well the quotes worked with the pictures, especially the last one. I'd remembered Esca talking about curves, but I'd forgotten he actually mentioned water and sand!

I'm in two minds about the movie -- I think Marcus is terribly miscast, but Jamie Bell makes a good Esca. And it does have a bit of a Romans in 'Nam feel about it. In the book, I think Cottia represents Marcus's future -- throughout the story, he's gradually being absorbed by Britain, and when he realises he wants to be with her, it's as though he's finally decided to accept his fate!

I'm about to start writing an Eagle/LOTR crossover (due in February).

I love cropping icons. I'm not very original; I just like to crop, sharpen some bits, then add some text!

Eagle/LOTR crossover

Oooo!
*anticipates*

I've said before that I think those four little pieces of Eagle art are superb, but I'll say it again :-) I particularly love the Cub one, where you have really caught the essence of the book, Cub's choice and Esca's, and fully acknowledging that Cub is a wolf, not a dog... That would make a fabulous poster!

The icons are lovely, but LOL: little elf icon. :-D

legolas_tiny

I'm looking forward to writing it, but you never know how it will go till you start, do you?

Thank you! I really enjoyed making the artwork. It was a change, because I've seldom done anything except LOTR and Harry Potter. It's a pity cub wasn't in the film. I think he's one of the ways Sutcliff shows us that their world is very different from ours.

I was thinking about the movie and the book, yesterday on my way to work, and decided that I like movie Esca, better than book Esca, but I like book Marcus better than movie Marcus. Part of it is the casting; I agree Marcus was not best cast in the movie. But much of it is the writing of Esca in the book. When I read the book, as a child, I loved Marcus, as one is supposed to. He is the POV character with whom the reader identifies. As such, we see his emotions and motivations in a way that we do not see Esca's. But Esca's behaviour jarred on me a bit. He was too compliant, too quickly.
On the other hand, some of the qualities that made book Marcus interesting were missing from the movie version - movie Marcus did not buy Esca and movie Marcus did not free him before they set off.
Sorry, I have gone on too long here. All that opinion ambushed me, somewhat *g*
I just googled to check something, while I was writing this, and stumbled on a very interesting review of the book that has some interesting things to say about Cottia - http://rosemarysutcliff.com/2010/02/26/tychy-on-the-eagle-of-the-ninth/

I'm about to start writing an Eagle/LOTR crossover (due in February).
That sounds like it could be fun; lots of interesting possibilities, although I find LotR fic very difficult to read because I can't keep the characters straight in my head, so I never know if I am reading about a human, an elf or a dwarf, which makes following the story difficult. *g*

books

I totally agree about Marcus and Esca.

Movie!Marcus, in addition to being physically all wrong (book!Marcus is smallish, not a huge, bull-necked football player!), is far too self-absorbed -- he has no interest in anyone but himself.

As you say, Book!Esca's motives aren't clear at all -- hence, I think, all the slash, the reasoning being that he must be physically attracted to Marcus. I actually find Esca's compliance interesting. It's as though he has taken some sort of off-stage oath and simply transformed himself into Marcus's slave. He's a much more practical person than Marcus, always in the right place at the right time, a real alpha-beta male, and I like that sort of character. Movie!Esca, otoh, is good with people and especially protective towards children. I suppose he's the character we're supposed to identify with.

The review was interesting. I think Sutcliff was well aware that Marcus's mission was a bit ambiguous because she says several times that he doesn't feel guilty, as though he actually does! But Marcus is basically working undercover, and befriending people and then betraying them 'for a greater good' is how it works.

Structurally, I think that Marcus begins the story as a Roman soldier and ends as a British civilian. Esca, Cub and Cottia all play a part in the transformation, but it's his potential relationship with Cottia that shows he's finally ready to leave the Eagles behind...

LOL! Someone once told me off for using 'the elf' when I could just use 'he'. I said it was because (I thought) an elf was a magical being and it was good to remind the reader every so often that he wasn't just a boring old human. But I can see now that there's a much better and more practical argument for doing it. My stories use a very small subset of the characters, and this one will have just one elf, one woman, and one elven child!

It's as though he has taken some sort of off-stage oath and simply transformed himself into Marcus's slave.
Absolutely. And that is what I didn't get. In the book, though, he is afraid in the circus and he fights for his life. He also loses because he forgets defence. So maybe I am being unfair to book Esca.

He's a much more practical person than Marcus, always in the right place at the right time, a real alpha-beta male, and I like that sort of character.
Me too. And that is a very good point. He is one who adapts and survives.

I hope the gallstones get sorted out. I don't know anything about it but am pretty sure these things are better removed, surely?

I've never seen the film of The Eagle. Was a bit afraid to because I love the book so much, but I do intend to get around to it some day, and your lovely banners are very encouraging. The key will probably be to treat it as a completely different story.

And those are the last NWS icons you'll ever make? That would be terribly sad, because they're beautiful. All the icons are beautiful. I wish you felt inspired to make GoT ones.

Thank you.

Game of Thrones! What a good idea. Do you know if it's out on DVD yet? Although I still have it on my Sky box, for some reason, I feel more 'connected' to a programme when I have a DVD.

The Eagle film is definitely best approached as a different story. It's an enjoyable film, but the emphasis is on the relationship between the two men, and Marcus is very different from the book!Marcus everyone falls in love with :-)

Catelyn Stark

I know what you mean about feeling more connected. Plus, since I always feel a bit guilty about d/l'ing stuff, I'm much happier when I have the DVDs because I'm perfectly happy to pay for stuff I've enjoyed. I just don't want to have to wait years to see it.

If you wanted to make icons before that, though, I'm pretty sure some of the GoT comms had big posts full of screen captures.

Sorry to hear about the gallstone. I hope they offer you some effective treatment rather than just avoiding the yummy food!

A new TV :D I expect everything looks lovely.

Adore the icons - especially #52. Jeffrey Dean Morgan is SO my type *lusts*

Yes! It's amazing! The other one was my Dad's and must have been the last CRT TV ever made, so this one is a real shock. Plus my brother talked me into buying one half as big again as I'd originally planned!

Ah - a 21st century TV! So much better and of course so slim!

'Smouldering' is a very apt description. I've also seen him interviewed and he's got a wicked sense of humour which of course means I lust after like him even more....
