A couple of drabbles and some icons

January 22nd, 2011 (10:41 am)

I do wish I'd never joined fanficrants. I was raised to feel permanently guilty, so whenever I read about the latest (in most cases, hapless child's) trangression, I find mysef thinking: maybe I do that > yes, I'm sure I do do that > OMG, I must stop writing fanfiction and atone for doing that (which really doesn't help when you have a challenge fic that needs writing).

OTHO, why do so many people write non-con slash? And think it's romantic?

...

Also... I went totally mad the other day, and volunteered to run a ficexchange! I am now the mod of dramione_duet. The next round isn't until June, so I'll have lots of time to panic before I actually need to do anything.

Pairing: Draco/Hermione
Prompt: waiting
Rating: G
Warnings: None

The rest of his life

When the cell door opens, she lays her hand upon his arm.

A year ago he would have shrugged it off, called her ‘Mudblood’, and accused her of trying to infect him. Now, he’s grateful.

“Come on,” says the guard.

No, he thinks, I can’t.

But she stands and, somehow, he stands with her.

At least, he thinks, it’s nearly over. (He’s never been good at waiting).

The verdict’s unanimous.

Shocked, he stumbles from the courtroom amidst a barrage of camera flashes, but it’s only when she throws her arms around him, sobbing, he understands that he’s a free man.

Prompt: a gift
Rating: G

Christmas past, present and future

She slips outside.

He’s waiting for her. “Granger.”

Weasley.”

“Whatever.” He takes her in his arms.

“Where does Astoria think you are?”

“My study.” He nuzzles her neck.

“She won’t look?”

“No.”

She stalls: “You know, we were kids when we made this vow.”

“So?”

“It needn’t bind us now, Draco.”

But his lips brush hers, and she knows she’s lying, knows how much she treasures this gift—a kiss, just one, every Christmas—that makes the rest of her life bearable.

She clings to him.

He pulls back, reluctantly. “Next year, Granger,” he breathes.

Yes, she thinks. Next year.

Bugger!

I do wish I'd never joined fanficrants.

Escape before it eats your soul...

I have some wonderful pictures of 'Indians' - desdemonaspace sent me a glorious calendar last year. Pity I didn't know or I could have scanned a few for you!

They have such wonderful faces. The 'man of the plains' is a modern image, but the others are 19th century and there's something about having to sit still for several minutes that produces really moving portraits.

Oh Dear

PS - just after I posted my comment S2C asked if I'd seen your post - he'd followed the link and it had kept him amused for hours - well, until he went to bed, anyway - particularly the thread about Lord Vetinari, from Discworld, killing a Lady Sybil because he fancies Vimes.

The concept of a Vetinari/Vimes romance was enough in itself to make the average reader go WTF? But the idea of The Patrician killing someone 'on the spur of the moment'... now that deserved to become a laughing stock!

I think S2C is a lot tougher than I am.

I read that particular post, but I don't know Discworld well enough to grasp the finer points -- for me, Lord Vetinari is just Charles Dance... But the whole 'fancies the husband so kills off the wife' scenario leaves me speechless.

I looked through fanficrants and said no and walked away. I don't have the energy to deal with it.

As for the icons I think the Miranda 18 & 19 are so pretty!

I know exactly what you mean! Sometimes you read a post, and the rant is as bad as the fic, and you just don't know where to start (or how to reset your brain).

I was pleased with no 18 :-)

DaiseeChain/Blue Daisy

So much pretty Orlando in your icons. Also, I love that you have an entire section for icons beginning with 'G'. :-D

Liked 'Past, present & future.'

Fanficrant sounds too much like fandomwank for my liking, although I did like the assertion in their 'about' page that 'you do not have a right to a fandom free from badfic'.

He was pretty, wasn't he? Not sure what he looks like any more. I'll have to Google.

I'm glad you liked 'Past, present and future'. I was quite pleased with it, because I thought it told a big story for 100 words.

'you do not have a right to a fandom free from badfic'

Wouldn't it be nice if people really believed that, and just clicked the Back button when they realised they didn't like something... Simples. I think there should be a rule that any writer who has less than 2 years experience and/or is less than 20 years old cannot be sporked/ranted at.

I find that, like metafandom, fanficrants gives a distorted view of fanfic, because it concentrates on trendy !fails. I'm sure the majority of stories out there are pretty inoffensive.
