Waaaah!

February 27th, 2010 (11:01 pm)

Well, I really shouldn't have complained, because now my laptop's dead.

It's something to do with the power supply -- either the transformer itself, or maybe the connector. The computer's insured but a) PC World is crap and b) I doubt that power supplies are covered and c) I installed XP on it myself, which is bound to have voided something. I will have to do some phoning on Wednesday, when I'm back from London.

The good thing is that, at Christmas, I backed up more or less everything to an external hard drive, and since then all I've done is write my Draco fic, so the only things I've lost are my fonts, my favourites and a few recent music and ebook downloads. My website is intact and I had about 5 minutes' warning to save Draco to a memory stick (25,000 words -- imagine if I'd lost that).

So -- probably because I was so down to start with -- I went bonkers, fired up my work machine, and ordered a new laptop from dabs.com. It should arrive on Wednesday. It's the cheapest they have, but I don't care, it runs XP and as long as I can install Open Office, Dreamweaver and my photo editing program, and connect to the web, it will be fine.

Aargh - but then Yay! for replacement, and not losing major stuff.

Our home insurance covered mine when the power packed up. I took it to the local computer shop that we regularly frequent, mainly to ask them about data retrieval. The manager said the problem was where the mains lead connected and fed in power, was pretty much irreparable, but looked as if I had tripped badly on the mains lead and yanked it out. 'Oh, loads of times,' I said, rather sheepishly - 'then claim it as accidental damage on the house insurance,' he said. Rather unbelieving I did - and lo! Replacement computer money arrived in the post.

So there is certainly hope in claiming.

(They also simply took the hard-drive out of it, put it in a case, and I could get everything from it then use it as an external hard-drive for back ups!)

That's all I need! Thank you! I'll ask advice at work tomorrow.

I thought that might be a useful thing to know. It hadn't occurred to me until the guy suggested it, and it meant that I lost nothing, and have vast amounts of extra storage.

It was brilliant! I've gone ahead and ordered one from dabs. It should come on the same day. So then I'll have to grit my teeth and do a bit of DIY.

Oh, that sounds really, really frustrating! I hope your new laptop arrives quickly and works beautifully.

Hello!

It was! Fortunately, I had my work laptop with me and could carry on writing. I've had confirmation that the new laptop will be delivered on Wednesday so, fingers crossed, it'll all be OK. And I've bought an 'enclosure' for my old hard drive, which should mean I can get all the data off it and then use it for extra storage.

Thank goodness you didn't lose your fic! I feel sick just at the thought!

We get so blase about it, don't we? I did have a fairly recent copy on a memory stick, but I fiddle all the time, changing words here and there, and I would have lost all that :-(
