This was a difficult one -- everything is too small and detailed to make good icons! Artist's Choice #10 is the mysterious Bamberg Rider, and #9 is a green man lurking in the foliage beneath him.

And Ruth's in the next one :-)

I love all of those programmes.

Tindome 2

Oh - so she is! I love all those programmes, too!

One of the things I like about them is they don't complain, they get on with it! I liked 24 Hours in the Past, too, for the same reason (plus it was a real eye-opener).

upside down

The Lindesfarne chessman is an inspired idea, lots of chunky shapes and clear lines there! I like 1, but he looks awfully disappointed. :-D

Thank you! I spent several days Googling everything Mediaeval I could think of, but it took me a while to come up with the chessmen. I don't know why. As a teenager I bought set of moulds and spent weeks casting a complete chess set :-)

Bamberg - Kathyh

OMG the Bamberg Rider! I must have him! Thank you so much for creating this icon, may I - with due credit, of course - use it?

Of course! Have you seen him? I've only seen pictures.

Bamberg is my hometown, so I've seen him thousands of times, actually.:) Years ago, I did two Bamberg pic spams you might enjoy, here, and here. (Summer and winter, respectively.)

Oh, wow, that's a great picture of him. Do you know anything about him -- who he was and why he's there?

Bamberger Reiter by Ningloreth

Here's what I taught in school: there's a legendary explanation and an art history speculation which is more likely. The more likely speculation is that he was not supposed to be any particular person but was supposed to embody the ideal of Christian knighthood.

The local Bamberg legend, otoh, has it that he's Stephen I. of Hungary, brother-in-law and friend to the Emperor Heinrich II. (aka the Emperor who build the cathedral), who supposedly came to visit but did not know which building the Emperor resided in. So he rode into the most beautiful building on the square, which was the cathedral. His horse, knowing instinctively this was a house of God, refused to move beyond the entrance because mass was just being read, and Stephen was impressed enough to convert.

(Err, the historical basis for this is that Stephen, who later became Hungary's national saint, was indeed Heinrich's brother-in-law and the first Christian ruler of Hungary, but he was converted and baptized by Adalbert of Prague before his marriage to Heinrich's sister Gisela.)

Thanks! I liked your posts -- the centre of Bamberg looks amazing, especially in the snow. And I love the old town hall. There's something wonderful about buildings on bridges!

I 'discovered' the rider when I was a student, studying the green man and, when I was making the icon, I vaguely remembered that he was said to be 'mysterious'. The bit about his riding into the cathedral's interesting -- when I went to the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, the guide told us that the door was very low to stop knights riding in on horseback. It must have been constant battle for the church authorities!

Whoever he is, there's something otherworldly about him, something very humble in that slightly slumping pose, and also in the horse's stance. He looks like a pilgrim to me, like someone who's left his worldly goods behind and gone in search of God.

One of the things I like about your photo is that I don't think I've ever seen the plinth in its entirety before.

I really like all the first set - the man with the rabbit is wonderful, beautifully framed, too.
And I love the chessman and the green man.

Thank you!

When I saw the list of subjects, I nearly gave up. I tried and tried to use calligraphy for 'abc' but the letters came out too small. But the hare and man seemed perfect for 'really tiny'.

They are all wonderful, but also particularly love the Chessman and the Green man, and negative space and reddish - they're just gorgeous.

Thank you! (I was pleased with myself when I saw the sunlight and shadow on the negative space picture -- which I think is the front wall of King's, Cambridge -- and thought, "Negative space!").

Rider.

I particularly like your use of the prompts 'splash of colour' and 'negative space' - really clever!

The rider in number 4 is clearly one of the Rohirrim...

When reading your subject I wasn't entirely sure what to expect but I really love your icons. I especially love Dots, Negative Space, 3 levels and Circles.

When I first read the themes, I nearly gave up! I had to think a bit laterally for some of them.
